Twins are coming!
Was I nervous to be giving birth in an operating room? Yes. Was having a c-section something that scared me? Yes. Did I know that I could give birth to 2 babies? Absolutely, so let’s have some babies.
Once we were rolled into the OR the nurse started calling everyone who needed to be there for a twin delivery. My OBGYN was on her way from the clinic just down the street and would be there soon.
There were many people in the OR, and I don’t think that many people realize just how many medical staff will be in the room with someone who will be having twins. There is the anesthesiologist, the scrub tech, your nurse, your OB, each twin has their own nurse and their own nursery staff, then there will be a second OB, and in my case my husband was also there.
The second OB was not only the “back-up” in case things went wrong and my OB needed help, but he was there to monitor baby B while I was delivering baby A. And since baby B was breached, he was also there to keep a sonogram on baby while we tried to turn him after delivering baby A.
So back to the excitement. Once my nurse was done making all the calls to all the medical staff who needed to be in the OR. She called my OB one last time to check on how close she was. My OB was on her way up to the labor and delivery wing of the hospital and told my nurse to let her know when I was dilated to a 10.
My nurse checked me one more time and said, “okay you’re at a 9 so you let me know if you feel any different.” I immediately said, “you need to check again, something is different, she’s coming.” And sure enough, baby girls head was crowning right as my OBGYN walked into the room. Perfect timing to catch baby girl! Kinzley Brown was born at 3:06pm weighing 6.9 pounds and was 20 inches long.
Now this is when things start getting a little wild. I told you that we knew baby B was breeched. Many people would automatically think “oh so you are going to be having a c-section”. Well, my OB assured me that if baby A came out first then she was 90% sure she could deliver the second baby vaginally.
My OB tried turning baby from the inside first, but he kept getting stuck on my rib and she was afraid that she would break his amniotic sac, aka his water. Keep in mind this whole time while she was trying to turn him the other OB was monitoring babies heart rate and had a sonogram picture on him, so they knew what they were pushing on. Since she was unable to turn him from inside, she tried pressing on my stomach to see if she could turn him from the outside without breaking his water. This also was not going to happen, he just kept getting stuck on my ribs.
SO, the fun starts. Before she proceeded anymore, she stopped everything and told us our options. She said that we could go ahead and do a c-section, or we could deliver this baby breeched. I was already going to be recovering from a vaginal delivery, I did not want to also be recovering from a c-section on top of that. We decided to deliver him breeched.
Once everyone was ready, I started pushing. At first everything was fine. There was a lot of pushing, I mean a LOT of hard pushing, but it was fine. Once his shoulder came out, that is when panic came over the room. Everything closed around his neck and everyone was yelling “PUSH MOM, YOU HAVE TO PUSH.” I pushed one more hard push and then passed out. I remember my OB saying, “I need help” and it was all hands-on deck but I don’t remember a good glimpse of what happened next.
My husband said the nurses, as well as himself, were helping me “push” by making my body kind of do sit ups. I did not pass out very long because I remember them placing my baby on my stomach.
They only put him on my stomach long enough for me to realize he was purple. I asked my husband why he was not crying, and my husband did not say anything. No one said anything. The nurse took him within seconds, and my husband said they started beating him, giving him sternum rubs, and basically trying to bring him to life at that point. We heard crying and immediately could start breathing again because we knew he was going to be okay.
Even though this whole process seemed like forever, our baby boy, Koehn Brown was born at 3:24pm weighing 7.2 pounds and was 21 inches long.
I was able to hold baby girl as I delivered baby boys placenta and as my OB took care of everything that they do after someone just gave birth. At one point my OB was talking to my nurse and she said, “no tear”. I looked at her and asked if she was being serious. She assured me that I did not tear at all. HOW? LOL my last delivery I tore so I just figured that I would tear this time since I gave birth to TWO babies.
I think there were a couple factors that helped me not tear this time around. One of those being that I actually had an epidural that worked this time, so I was able to relax my legs the whole time. The second factor might sound weird to some, but my OB would do vaginal rubs during the delivery which I think helped open the vagina without causing damage.
Now it was time to go back to the laboring room. I had just delivered healthy TWINS! I was so proud of myself and my whole medical team.
