Sonogram Day

On the day of the sonogram, we were just kind of going through the motions. We were in that waiting room less than a year ago! Of course we were exited but I was more so just really scared of having all the judgment and comments of getting pregnant again so soon after our first.

I should also mention that before this appointment I called and switched my OBGYN. I just had a heck of a time with my previous OB, as you know if you read about my last pregnancy. When I called to make the switch, they informed me that once I switched, I cannot go back. That was 100% fine with me! I switched to an OB who half of my friends and coworkers see, and I am SO glad that I did. She ended up being by far the best doctor I could have EVER had!

The ultrasound tech came out to the waiting room and called my name. As we were going back to the room, I was getting a little nervous because you just never know what they are going to see on that screen. I was getting nervous about the health of the baby, even though I had no reason to be worried, but again it’s just little things like that you worry about the moments before seeing your baby on the screen.

We got into the room, I laid back in the chair, she propped my feet up, my husband was sitting right next to me on my left, and she was on my right getting ready to put the gel on my tummy. The next couple minutes happened so fast that I kid you not I still think we are shocked to this day from the words that came out of her mouth.

She put gel on my tummy and then sat the doppler a little under my belly button and without even moving the doppler she turned to use and said, “Do twins run in your family?!”. I was too shocked to even speak, and Cody turns to her and says “Yeah, why?”. I pointed to the screen and told him there were two! Cody was speechless then at that point. We just started kind of giggling because there was NO way we expected this. I immediately knew that was the reason I was showing so much faster than I did my first pregnancy.

To answer her question. Yes, twins do run on both sides. Cody, my husband, has a couple sets on his side and I have quite a few on my side. When we tell people this, they always just assume that we were not shocked by the news of having twins. Trust me, when I say we were extremely shocked! Even though twins run on both sides, you never think you are going to be the one that ends up carrying twins.

We went on with the sonogram and she assured us that both babies were very healthy and doing great. At this time, we could not tell the gender so there was still a question on if they would be identical or not. As she kept talking to us about them, she told me that what happened was I ended up over ovulating. So, I ended up ovulating from both sides and both eggs became fertilized. Because of this both babies had their own amniotic sacs and placentas. This form of twin pregnancy is called Dichorionic diamniotic. Essentially this means each of the babies are growing like they would as a singleton, just a little more cramped, because they're sharing the same womb. The chance for them being identical with this type of pregnancy is basically zero so we knew from the get-go that we were not going to have identical twins.

After the sonogram, the Women’s Health Group has you meet with someone and they go over your family health history, any questions that you could have about pregnancy, signs to watch out for during pregnancy that could be depression, and then they set up all your appointments with your OB for the whole pregnancy. The whole time we were in that room we were just in awe at the fact we were having twins. The lady who was talking to us was also excited for us and just kept smiling and talking about how twins are so special!

Once we finished the appointment we got into the truck and just sat there. What are we going to do???? No one knew about the pregnancy other than my sister and we just had to tell someone, so we called her up and I said, “so we just had our first sonogram and guess what?”. She said, “your having twins.”. When I told her we were she was talking about how we knew it was going to be one of us sisters.

Once we got off the phone with her, we still felt like we needed to tell people, so Cody rolled down his windows and shouted it at the top of his lungs. “WE ARE HAVING TWINS!”. We both laughed and started the drive home. Now the journey of having a twin pregnancy begins.
